i came into work early
to paint the devil
on the wall

then i went for coffee
later i got the intimate
play by play

the drought had announced
a newfound inspiration
in thirst

after being estranged
since the late twenties,
and for a moment

there, panic replaced
non-panic when
one boy mistook

the monkey's smile
as an invitation
to dance.
